"Anthem" Stage Dialogue

[Walk back to Whip Guy] 
Whip Guy: Gunvolt... It can't be...
Gunvolt: (He's just muttering those words over and over. Looks like he's in a daze.)

Whip Guy: The boy is escaping! Cut the power to the elevator! Now! 
Whip Guy: He can use electricity... He might be Gunvolt. 
Soldier: You mean...that adept that escaped from Sumeragi's research facility? 
Whip Guy: Yes. The SS-rank adept, Azure Striker Gunvolt. Be on your toes. 
Soldier: Sir!



Asimov: Do you remember your actions? It might be good to brush up on them again.
Asimov: Jump with the B button, and shoot with the Y button.
Asimov: You can dash by pressing the L button, and pressing the R button will unleash your special technique, the Flashfield.
Asimov: Lock on to enemies with your gun, and then take them out with the Flashfield.
Asimov: You can change any of these in the Controls menu.

Asimov: When you're not using the Flashfield, you'll automatically dodge enemy attacks using a technique called Prevasion.
Asimov: If you're low on health, stop attacking. That way you won't take any damage.
Zeno: Man, that's like cheating! Hahaha!
Gunvolt: This isn't the time, Zeno. I'm ending the transmission.
Zeno: Come on, I was just joking!

Asimov: Remember that Prevasion can't nullify damage indefinitely.
Asimov: Each time you use it, your EP will decrease.
Asimov: Don't get overconfident.

[In the Elevator]
Moniqa: GV, I know where the target is.
Moniqa: There's a Sumeragi transport train that's stopped at this facility. It just got loaded onto there.
Gunvolt: Got it. (She must mean that freight train over there... It looks like it's about to leave. Can I make it there in time?)

[Outside the Elevator]
Soldier: The prisoner has made it to the top floor! I'm lowering the bulkheads!
Whip Guy: Why is the elevator working!? Guards! Do whatever it takes to catch him!

[At the first bulkhead]
Gunvolt: (I should be able to dash past these before they close.)
Gunvolt: (If one's blocking me off, I can destroy it with my Flashfield.)

Zeno: This is Sheeps 2. I've got another tip for you.
Zeno: If you take off the pendant you're wearing, you won't be able to use Prevasion. Keep that in mind.
Gunvolt: (This is the pendant Asimov gave me... How in the world does it work?)

Moniqa: Destroy that Gate Monolith to clear the area.
Gunvolt: Got it. Destroying the target now.

[Part 2]
Asimov: Looks like you made it onto the train. The Muse is in the front car.
Gunvolt: Roger. I'll make my way to the front.

[When you move towards the back of the train]
Zeno: Hey, don't fall off!
Zeno: Though knowing you, you'd probably be just fine.
Gunvolt: What do you think I am...?

Soldier: So that's Gunvolt, the terrorist... Isn't he just a kid?

Moniqa: I'm picking up something on radar. Looks like some 9th-generation tanks.
Asimov: I found the targets; commencing ambush. One down, two down... Tsk.
Asimov: I sniped down two of the tanks. The other one is heading for the train.

[Mantis Battle]
Moniqa: Unmanned 9th-generation tanks all have the same weak point.
Moniqa: When the head area takes a lot of damage, the emergency cooling sequence activates and pushes the core out through the top.
Moniqa: If you attack the core, you should be able to defeat it.
Gunvolt: Got it. I'm engaging the Mantis now. Thanks, Moniqa.

[If you don't beat the Mantis the first time you knock it down]
Moniqa: Once the cooling's complete, the Mantis will start back up. Just attack the head again.
Gunvolt: ...Not a bad trick, for the military.

[Mantis Defeated]
Gunvolt: I've defeated the Mantis.
Soldier 1: No way! He's just a kid! How could he take out a Mantis!?
Soldier 2: We should still have one left! Contact HQ and tell them to send it to the front of the train!

Zeno: I guess I won't be able to see Lumen anymore after you destroy her program core.
Zeno: I actually liked her a lot. She has that kind of mature feel to her.
Zeno: Who'dve guessed her songs were actually a sonar that finds adepts?
Asimov: Even if the Muse is a source of hope for the citizens of this country...
Asimov: ...she has allowed many of our brethren to be captured by Sumeragi, and they're still suffering now.
Gunvolt: ...
Zeno: ...Yeah, I know. I'm not stupid enough to let my personal feelings affect my job.

Soldier: Mantis, moving out! This is our last one, so make it count!

[First laser fires]
Gunvolt: A laser cannon? Glad I'm getting a warm welcome.

Soldier: How's this? Try to survive a blast from our high-power radiation amplification cannon!

[Second Mantis fight]
Gunvolt: There's no platform like last time, so it's a little harder to hit.
Gunvolt: It won't be a problem, though.
Gunvolt: Burst forth, Azure Striker! Pierce my enemies and destroy them!

[Second Mantis defeated]
Gunvolt: That wasn't as bad as I thought.
Soldier: No way! That Gunvolt's a monster!
Soldier: He's going to break through our defenses! Come in, HQ! We need backup!

Asimov: This is Sheeps Leader. I'm going to snipe the train from the helicopter and separate the locomotive from the rest of the train.
Asimov: Once the car with the target has stopped, infiltrate it and destroy the program core as fast as you can.


[Translation Notes]
- Asimov, Zeno, Gunvolt, and Moniqa are all part of "Team Sheeps", possibly one of several teams in QUILL. Asimov is Sheeps Leader, Zeno is Sheeps 2, and Moniqa is Sheeps 3. Gunvolt doesn't seem to have a Sheeps number and is just called GV.

- The Japanese name for the Flashfield is raigekirin (雷撃鱗, "lightning scale"), and is likely a combination of the two words raigeki (雷撃, "lightning strike") and gekirin (逆鱗, lit. "reverse scale"). Gekirin has kind of a complicated etymology, originally coming from a legend that dragons have under their chin a single scale that grows against the grain of the other scales. It's said that if you touch this scale, the dragon will become enraged. "Touching the gekirin" became an idiom for angering the emperor of Japan, and eventually just angering your boss. However, I think the "gekirin" part of raigekirin is just supposed to evoke a sense of "rage" or "fierceness".

- Prevasion is called kagerou (カゲロウ) in Japanese, which means "heat haze", or more generally, "mirage". However, kagerou is just the reading for the name; the kanji for the name are different, and mean "electromagnetic barrier" (電磁結界). If you're not familiar with Japanese it's a little hard to explain, but if you want to know more about this nonsense of having one word be read as a different word, look up "furigana" on Wikipedia.

- In Japanese, Lumen's title (and I think the name of her septima) is "Cyber Diva" (the equivalent of "Muse"). The kanji for it mean "electronic singing fairy" (電子の謡精). The title of the stage in Japanese is also "singing fairy" (謡精).

- QUILL is called "Feather" in Japanese. Its full name is "Private Military Organization Feather".

- The Japanese equivalent of "Azure Striker" is "Armed Blue" (アームドブルー). The kanji for it mean "blue lightning" (蒼き雷霆).
