Dengeki Nintendo Character Profiles: Elise

It's been quite a bit since I last posted a Dengeki Nintendo profile. The wait is now over, however, and I officially have a fresh new batch of translations to share, courtesy of  the very generous Zoram Selrof! So, why don't we start things off right with the "Eternal Envy" herself, Elise!
Enjoy, folks!

Elise 1

She’s a girl who, as a result of her shy personality and the fact that she was a Psychic, got bullied by other girls of her age.

Emotions filled with jealousy swirl in the depths of her heart, and that jealousy is directed towards those people who live in a peaceful manner. Yet, due to her timid nature, she almost never brings it out.

However, as a result of Sumeragi’s experiments, the passion of her jealousy which was slumbering in the depths of her heart ended up manifesting as a split personality.

Elise 2
She originally was supposed to be a personality submissive to Sumeragi, but maybe due to influence from the darkness in Elise’s heart, she manifested herself as a violent personality. She went berserk and turned many of the researchers into zombies.

(The 7th Wave <Sevens> is greatly influenced by the user’s mental state as well, so it’s very hard to perform brainwashing on the user when the 7th Wave <Sevens> is on a rampage or when the user’s personality hasn’t been erased)

As a result, she was sealed deep inside the depths of Elise 1's consciousness. Her 7th Wave (Sevens) is the most powerful out of the 3 personalities.

Given her endless vitality, it’s not possible for conventional attacks to even harm her. Sometimes she compares battles to games, which might be an expression of herself since she never had any friends to play with

Elise 3

She’s a new personality created after Elise 2, but she turned out to be a failure. Elise’s personality was split further and Elise 3 became a belligerent and authoritarian personality.

Elise 1 may have had some  jealous longing towards the bullies somewhere in her heart, and that might be the reason for Elise 3’s personality.

The remaining researchers were turned into zombies by her and Sumeragi’s research facility ended up being destroyed.

Life Reincarnation (Unlimited Animus):

A 7th Wave (Sevens) that controls souls and resurrects living things.
However, the resurrected subjects become zombies.

This ability is strengthened after transforming with a “Sword." Elise then becomes capable of using moves such as “Jealous Gorgon,” which turns those who look at it directly into a state of apparent death. In addition, Elise 2 becomes capable of carrying out a complete resurrection without transforming the subject into a zombie (Skybane Note: To clarify this sentence [since it may appear to contradict the first set of text], while Elise 2 doesn't normally  have the power to resurrect subjects without turning them into zombies, her "Sword" gives her extra power to negate this effect).

Snake shuriken

Kunai made from snake corpses. When they make contact, Elise uses her 7th Wave (Sevens) to resurrect them into zombie snakes.
"Futsu no Mitama (Cloth-city’s Soul)"

Elise’s “Sword”.

This “Sword” is based on the sword that the Thunder God Takemikazuchi is said to have used when subjugating the “ashihara no nakatsukuni" (TR note: "the middle country of red beds" --- Mythological naming of Japan).

Ah man, as if I didn't feel bad enough for Elise already! That backstory is a really, really sad. Gotta say, though, those bullies had some major guts to abuse a girl who could sic snakes on them at a moment's notice.
(Also, Sumeragi has a really bad habit for letting their research facilities go up in flames, don't they? lol)

Anyway, hope you enjoyed this translation! By the way, this issue of Dengeki Nintendo also came with a short story involving Joule, but Zoram wants to wait until all three parts have come out to share it. So yeah, stay tuned for that!

Thanks again to Zoram Selrof for the translation!

  1. So 1 is the original
    2 is the crazy one
And 3 is the dominant one?

    1. Yep! This was established even the game, actually.

    2. I see.
what does a jealous longing mean though and how would that make her dominant? It seems to me that that would hint at a soft spot which is evidently not there.

    3. Well, I would argue that jealousy is an emotion that that all kinds of people are susceptible to. In any case, though, it's worth noting that Elise 3 is a manifestation of Elise 1's hidden hostilities towards other people. That said, as for how a jealous longing would make her dominant, I would say that, subconsciously, Elise was jealous of the bullies who bullied her, and this jealousy made her want to bully other people. Because Elise 1 was so shy, though, these inner feelings manifested themselves in Elise 3's personality. Now, it may sound odd that she would be jealous of the very people who harmed her, but it's a psychological fact that this behavior sometimes takes place in a person who has been abused.

    4. So it's kinda like Stockholm syndrome.

  2. I've always wondered why Elise was envy.
I personally just figured that there was another Elise which was the true one hidden somewhere but this makes a lot more sense and puts some stuff into perspective.

    1. I would bet anything that Sumeragi kept their 4th ace hidden far up their sleeve.
But I hope that they don't revive and rehash some of the old bosses.
I wanna see completely new adepts.

    1. Great, thanks. :)
Do you know if they'll make bios for Gino and Moniqa?
I'd love to learn more about GV's old team.

    2. We don't know yet. It all depends on what contents there are in the next Dengeki Nintendo. They might reveal info about the sequel for all we know.

  4. Anyone else find it odd that some of the bios tell us stuff in the form of questions instead of statements?
