Gunvolt 4-Komas From Dengeki Nintendo (June)

Boy oh boy, do I have something special to share today! This month's issue of Dengeki Nintendo highlighted some pretty awesome Gunvolt 4-komas (4-panel Japanese comic strips) drawn by Shin Ogino, whom some of you folks may know as the artist of the Mega Man ZX manga. Gunvolt fan Tavi was kind enough to send all ten of these 4-komas my way and translate them for the reading pleasure of English fans! You can check 'em out in all their hilarious glory below!

Needless to say, massive thanks to Tavi for sharing these super tasty treats with us!

  3. Also, I'm kinda shocked to see GV be affected by static electricity

  4. I wonder why Asimov can't speak either English or Japanese properly?
It's almost like he was raised in captivity or something.

    1. Well, he was a test subject of Sumeragi until his teens approximately so he surely didn't get much of an education to begin with.

Maybe then he tried to teach to himself and ended up mixing them. But when he gets serious he can speak in a proper manner.

Makes you wonder if the "Team Sheeps" thing is a result of his lack of English knowledge or he was making a pun at some point.

    2. Excellent point.
Makes you wonder when he was abducted though.
I always figured that the sheep thing was a reference to
      Baba black sheep.

    3. Interesting that he speaks properly when serious.
Also where is it stated that Asimov is American.
      It isn't in his profile.

    4. The only explicit reference to Asimov being American comes from a design sheet in the official site's profile which is titled "Leader (American)" because his name hadn't been decided yet.

Asimov is also described the waif of illegall immigrants. So he's not Japanese.

It says that at some point the Sumeragi Hunters abducted him and he was deemed to be compatible with the Azure Thunderclap yet he was unable to fully control it so he's considered a defective.

We know is that he's 24 by the game's time: yet Acura and Michiru were already born so it can't be more than 14 years before the game. Which at the most would put Asimov at about 9-10 years old when he caused the lab accident and escaped.

It's possible that he's been experimented upon for years since he was rotated from research team to team.

    5. That would make a lot of sense since CEO said that Asimov and GV met when GV was about 9. Asimov probably saw himself in GV and rescued him and took him under his wing, kinda like how GV saw himself in Cyan. Asimov would've been around 19 when he met GV though.

Shinden was the second test subject for Armed Blue, according to Justice Rage. (although his voice still sounds the same because it's just young in general doesn't help with age there) GV was the last to be tested on and the only success that we know of.

I still find it interesting that Asimov calls himself a success, even though he is clearly not during that battle as well...

(I certainly didn't think silly comics would spawn legit discussion but whadda y'know :3)

    6. No, Shiden wasn't the second test subject. He was one of many. If you listen to the track again you'll see the head scientist says "he's the 3rd one to fail today" so there had to be more than 3. He says he thinks "that blonde boy" (GV) might have a slightly higher chance of succeedding.

And, also, by then the lab accident that Asimov triggered had already happened yet we don't know if it was very recently or some time has passed already.

Shiden was 7 by then as noted by the Justice Rage booklet. So GV was also 6/7. So this was about 2/3 years before Asimov met GV.

    7. Ah, I haven't seen the booklet, and I only really listened to it once or twice so i could've missed something.

However, I am pretty sure the 'takefuya' incident happened after they deemed him 'defected' and was subjected to all sorts of inhumane tests afterwards like a labrat. Wish I could find the original text rather than the english for Memories but iirc it described Asimov as a 'teen' as the least.

It is interesting to me that GV was only locked up for 2-3 years before freedom, which probably helped his personally more than Asimov's seething hatred for the scientists(and normal people by extension). I've also assumed that Asimov established FEATHER in the meantime, but maybe that's not correct. Maybe he just saved the adepts on his own but idk seems weird not to have FEATHER involved in something that's 'freeing' people from something inhumane. GV's also never really mentioned being in a limbo, but always either in Sumeragi or in FEATHER so hm...

God I love piecing this stuff together, it's fun.

    8. The memoria's text when Kamizono and his assistant enter the room Asimov is at:

      それは、全身を拘束された歳若い少年のものだった。
Sore wa, zenshin wo kousoku sareta toshi wakai shounen no mono datta.
That was a young boy that was totally restrained.

"Young boy" is very vague here. Could be any age range.

And by this stage Asimov had been experimented upon by various teams yet deemed a defective because he was unable to properly control his Sevens.

And remember that GV is an artificially created human just like Cyan who have a genetic predispostion to be compatible with Sevens.

He and many other artificially created children were implanted with "Ability Factors" to see their compatability to different types of Sevens.

GV and Shiden were part of "Project Gunvolt" along with Asimov yet as I've said before Asimov was considered a failure.

The scientist in charge of the experiments says that there hasn't been a single success insofar (Asimov was assumed to have died when he burnt down the lab) and that Shiden showed promise yet he was unable to fully assimilate with the Armed Blue.

Maybe GV actually experiences some level of hatred but doesn't make it visible. I mean, we never see him laugh. Not even once. He gets angry several times and other times he seems dense about some things. He doesn't seem to pay much attention to what Asimov says when they fight in the orbital elevator but that's because he's furious for what he did to him and Cyan.

GV supposedly had another name in the past but doesn't like to talk about it. It'd seem he himself didn't know what Project Gunvolt was so maybe Asimov was the one who gave him that name that at first was supposed to be a codename but at some point he adopted it as his own name.

This is another topic yet Asimov seemed to have been looking forward to gain an overwhelming power capable of allowing him to have his payback on normal humans ever since he established Feather (you needn't write it in capital letters: it's not an acronym).

In fact we know that in the sequel he saves Ouka from a wild Psychic and Ouka offers him shelter which he accepts which proves he doesn't mind getting along with normal people (he went to school for half a year as well) and had no problem cooperating with Monica either.

    9. I'm gonna have to look into the Japanese references further it seems like *cracks knuckles* 'artificial human' still sounds weird to me. The Seventh's gene is cloned and synthetic but i dont think the kids themselves are (considering the capture orphans and the like for testing, people who dont have families, and they could run tests in orphanages being the 'leaders' of japan)

GV also gets along with normals becuase he doesnt group people. He even tells and asks Cyan about the nice people in sumeragi (hence the joke above aside) and even mentions he was allowed to watch TV.

Thanks for the extra puzzle pieces tho.

    10. Alrighty, re-listened to the track a couple times. Japanese is kinda vague about GV himself, I'm sure 'candidate' could refer to both clone and captured. I'm also curious to why they gave them names, maybe it's a human factor. It's also odd that Cyan is hailed in english as 'the first synthetic' where as on her Japanese page there is no 'first' to be seen, possibly where my confusion came from and mixed up with other things that have been swimming in my head.

I feel like the LE drama cd is going to give us a TON of information that'll help fill in places and... give us more questions of course. At this point I'm just rambling my thoughts aloud in many directions. :>

    11. I would consider Asimov a success because we have no idea how far in terms of control he has come since then.
Also I think he was holding back in the final fight because if he let loose and destroyed the elevator like the research lab then both he and GV would have died.
Also he would obviously be wearing more equipment like GV to restrain his power but only takes off his glasses something which he didn't even do to fight Copen and Nowa.
I really hope they explain more about him though because I don't want him to be the cliched villain.
Some guy posted a theory about on the what went wrong with Asimov page and another one is on the new boss info for the second game page
Check it out because that plot twist would be epic.
I also want to know more about Gino because he and Asimov are my two favorite characters.
Yeah it is really fun to create theories by piecing together the info that we have.

    12. What if Asimov's powers were harder to control because they were more organic more alive more protective of it's weilder as for all we know it only really lashed out when he was a prisoner and for the later experiments they cut off the gene a bit more to make it more synthetic which is why GV can control his with no problems.
I got this theory from a story that I was reading but can't remember which right now.
      Does anyone know it?

  5. It's written on GV's profile (available on this site) that Sevens "mainly expresses itself in boys and girls below 10 years old. Since it’s a special ability that only those with a special 7th wave-form could use, as established by the wave research at the time, it was named 7th Wave (Sevens)".

"The first 7th Wave Psychics were people born through a natural occurrence but, currently, the Sumeragi Group’s research has succeeded in nurturing the 7th Wave Guidance Factors. And thus it’s become possible to artificially create 7th Wave Psychics."

"Humans and animals that contain 7th Wave potential capability are test subjects, also named matches. By transplanting the 7th Wave Guidance Factors into them, the Abilities bloom but it’s very hard to find a match for them. Gunvolt and Cyan are some of the few Sumeragi-created subsequent 7th Wave Psychics."

About the sunglasses (taken from Asimov's profile)
"A safety device to control his abilities. This equipment is the same system as GV’s contact lenses, yet, unlike GV who uses those to increase his 7th Wave (Sevens), Asimov uses it to seal his own 7th Wave (Sevens). "

Maybe the sunglasses have a system that allows him to control the output of his Sevens hence why he didn't take them off when he fought Acura: he surely didn't see the need to.

And besides, the lab burnt down because the berserk electricity surely ignited some flamable products or susbstances or overloaded electrical systems: the elevator was intact because it was more though since it must resist Earth's gravity tug and all kinds of radiation.

Besides, in-game Shiden called GV "Sumeragi's masterpiece". GV also says something about it on the database stage (Carrera's stage):

My past, my creation by Sumeragi as a test subject…

I won’t allow them to give birth to new casualties from that clinical data…

Those chains of sadness… Will be cut off by me…!

    Also, coming from Cyan's profile:

She’s an artificial 7th Wave (Sevens) Psychics created through a Sumeragi experiment: she’s a rare case, even within Sumeragi, since she had the 7th Wave (Sevens) Guidance Factors implanted on her before being born: she’s a designer child.

Since she’s spent most of her life ever since her birth in a research facility there are some aspects about society she’s unfamiliar with: some Sumeragi researchers that sympathized with her upbringing actually provided her with some stuff so she’s got some offset in her knowledge (she especially loved to read a poem collection she was provided with).

So I think this is clear enough: both she and GV are artificial.

    Shiden, however IS an orphan.

He was an orphan raised in a Sumeragi 7th Wave (Sevens) research institution and a test subject, like GV, of “Project Gunvolt” but he didn’t match with the Azure Thunderclap (Armed Blue) and ran berserk.

So there are both artificially created test subjects and orphans: and some people who developed them naturally without any interference by Sumeragi (Panthera, Merak, Daytona, Iota, Carrera, Elise, the unnamed shopping mall assaulter, the unnamed water Psychic that fights Daytona in Justice Rage, the The Tsujigiri Rupturer (Raptor) from the Memoria, etc).

Asimov, as I've said before, was a waif of 2 illegal immigrants who was kidnapped and turned into a test subject.

    ReplyDelete
  6. It said on GV's profile that Sumeragi creates artificial Psychics like him or Cyan: yet Shiden was an orphan with a Sevens predisposition.

So GV spent his whole life until being rescued by Asimov being experimented upon like Cyan and many others.

Why create artificial children? Because Sevens appears on children below 10. It's at this stage that their Sevens develops.

Of course, there are many natural Psychics out there whose ability was formed naturally without Sumeragi interference (the 7 Swords, for example, Gino, Asimov, the unnamed shopping mall assaulter, the tsujigiri, Rei's senior, the unnamed world's first Sevens Pyshic who's the origin of the Armed Blue).

    1. Wasn't Asimov an artificially created adept?

      Delete
    2. In part. He was implanted with Ability Factors to artificially grant him an Ability. But he was the waif of two illegal immigrants. So he's naturally born but artificially turned into a Psychic like Shiden.

      Delete
    3. Oh that is what you meant.
I thought you meant an adept who got their powers naturally.

      Delete
  7. Personally I would prefer it if he was a natural adept.
Also who is to say that his power did not manifest under the stress of the experiments.
